May 25-31 Scripture

May 24th, 2011

We are finishing James this week!!  We will discuss the next 2 verses and spend some time in prayer next week.

Scripture for May 25-31, 2011

Wednesday – Tuesday

James 5:19 & 20

Prayer time

Sorry, life has been busy.  I knew I had missed posting last week, but didn’t realize I had missed the week before too.  Wow!  So to sum up:

May 10 (James 5:1-6) – We talked a lot about the balance of living wisely and being financially responsible (saving for our futures) and the warning about riches here.  These were tough verses.  How that looks to each person is different, but we talked about our motives and why we save our money.  Ultimately if God tells us to give away all our money, we need to obey him.  We also talked about listening to he cries of those in need.

May 17 – (James 5:7-12) We talked about how a farmer doesn’t just sit around and wait for a crop to come up.  He continues to take care of the ground, watering and weeding.  So we need to be doing and sharing as we wait for the Lord.  We were all challenged not to grumble – how hard that is!  We also spent time discussing what it means to “swear” or “take an oath”.  And if our character is as it should be we should not have to take an oath to prove to people we will keep our word.

May 24 – (James 5:13-18) These verses are great verses to read over and over again.  We discussed the part about anointing the sick and praying over people and what that looks like in our time and age. We also talked about how we would love to be know as the person of “earnest prayer” and a “righteous person”.  We need to all be striving for this, but through Jesus we are already righteous.

Easter Break

April 12th, 2011

So we will not meet the next two weeks, but I encourage you to spend some time reading through the Easter story.  Finish John 13 and go through the resurrection.  Or spend some time reading the same section in each of the gospels.  This is one of the few times where all 4 gospels talk about the same things.  It makes sense it is the whole reason He came!  (Not even his birth is in all 4 gospels.)

I will see you again on May 3rd!  We will catch up that week and then finish James by the end of May!

What You Missed Apr 12

April 12th, 2011

What a great day, with great ladies!  The John verses were great to talk through today.  All of us agreed it was hard to read these verses and not focus on the fact that Jesus, who was fully aware Judas would betray him, still washed Judas’ feet!!  Can’t say I would do to same to a person who I knew would hand me over to be killed in a few hours.  But that is what makes Jesus and us very different.  Jesus was definitely looking at the big picture – saving the world!

Looking at this passage from the disciples perspective, also proves to be interesting. These feet were not clean feet – walking on dusty roads, that had animals also walking on them (read between the lines there), in sandals.  And here is their “Lord” and “Teacher” washing their feet.  This was the job of a servant and not just any servant the LOWEST servant got stuck washing the feet of the guests.  Not sure where the servant of the house was, maybe with his master, this was however a borrowed room.  But if the servant wasn’t there to wash the feet someone should have done it.  And the last person it should have been was Jesus.  Can you imagine the looks the disciples were giving each other? :-)

We also spent some time soaking in the fact that we need to be humble servants, as Jesus was.  And what do we get out of it?  We will be blessed.  Wow blessed by God is something I would love to be.  And so we saw a little of that blessing today as we “washed” each others feet.  We didn’t scrub as Jesus might have had to do and I am glad to say none of the ladies needed the washing, but we spent some time praying for each other as we humbled ourselves and served another lady.  Hmm…I wonder if Jesus prayed individually for each of the disciples as he washed their feet? And if so, what did he pray for Judas? For God to forgive him, maybe?
